Online Health & Safety Rep Training Overview

This one-day, self-paced online Health and Safety Representative (HSR) basic training course helps HSRs perform their legislative functions regardless of sector.

This program equips HSRs with the necessary skills and understanding to fulfill their responsibilities effectively. Upon completion, participants receive a printable certificate as proof of their training accomplishment.

In addition to this HSR basic training, specialized sector-specific HSR training programs may be required. Learn more about the powers and duties of a H & S Rep by reading sections 8 and 43 of the OHSA

This one-day, self-paced online Health and Safety Representative (HSR) basic training program to help HSRs perform their legislative functions regardless of sector.

 

How do I know if my business needs a health and safety representative?

Employers or constructors must ensure that an Health and Safety Representative (HSR) is selected in workplaces, including construction projects at which: the number of workers regularly employed is 6 -19 workers and no joint health and safety committee is required (JHSCs are required for most workplaces with 20 or more workers regularly employed).

Who is a health and safety representative selected by?

A Health and Safety Representative must be selected by fellow workers who do not exercise managerial functions or by the union, if the workplace is unionized.

Apply for reimbursement through Ontario’s Small Business Health and Safety Training Program

Small businesses can apply to be reimbursed for Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training through Ontario’s Small Business Health and Safety Training Program. The program will cover:

  • $25 course registration fee for the HSR training
  • $150 towards the HSR’s training time
  • For more details on reimbursement instructions, please refer to the information below.

    To Note:  Reimbursements will come to an end on March 31, 2024, at 5 pm ET. Learners who complete the course and have the certificate of completion in hand by the end date can have their employers submit reimbursement applications until 11:59 pm ET on July 15, 2024.

  • Rights, duties and responsibilities of the workplace parties
  • Duties and responsibilities of the HSR under the OHSA
  • Common workplace hazards
  • Hazard recognition, assessment, control, and evaluation (RACE methodology) of hazard controls
  • Applying the RACE methodology (recognize, assess, control and evaluate) to a workplace hazard
  • Health and safety resources available to the workplace parties.

HSR Training Benefits:

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the organization and content of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Describe the general duties and responsibilities of workplace parties.
  • Describe the powers, functions and duties of a health and safety representative (HSR) under the Act.
  • Identify common workplace health and safety hazards.
  • Describe the legal requirements of workplace inspections.
  • Identify the principles for conducting effective workplace inspections.
  • Describe the steps for conducting an effective accident investigation.
  • Identify the legal requirements for investigating accidents by the MLTSD.
